Radiation therapy program earns national accreditation

Sharon Regional's radiation therapy program at its Cancer Care Center in Hermitage was recently awarded a three-year accreditation by the American College of Radiology (ACR). The program is one of nine satellite centers affiliated with the Allegheny General Hospital Department of Radiation Oncology/West Penn Allegheny Health System Radiation Oncology Network.
Surveyors from ACR conducted an intensive, on-site review of Sharon Regional's radiation therapy program in November 2007. The review covered clinical quality protocols along with technical and management operations.
In addition, a number of patient charts were identified and reviewed internally for compliance with all ACR standards.
Dennis Ulewicz, M.D., director of radiation oncology at Sharon Regional's Cancer Care Center, said that ACR accreditation validates the quality assurance procedures, standards of clinical and technical care, and peer review instituted throughout the Radiation Oncology Network. "We're proud that our radiation therapy program meets the stringent standards of ACR accreditation," stated Dr. Ulewicz. "Our patients have full access to many of the same cancer treatment options that are available in Pittsburgh or other large cities, including access to national clinical trials, without having to face additional challenges driving into Pittsburgh or other out-of-town location."
The Cancer Care Center is Mercer County's only location for comprehensive cancer treatment services within one new and modern location. In addition to radiation oncology, services include hematology and medical oncology consultation and treatment, blood administration, intravenous infusions, on-site laboratory and social service counseling, and extensive education and support services.
