The Sean MacBride Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians in Trumbull County (AOH), a national, fraternal organization of Irish Catholics, held its Annual St. Patrick's Day Scholarship Mass and Breakfast Saturday, March 8, where three local high school seniors were awarded scholarships of $1,000 each for their essays on, "Why do so many people want to be Irish on St. Patrick's Day?" Daniel Theodore Dray and Patrick Joseph Murphy both of John F. Kennedy High School and Heidi Lynn Palipchak of Brookfield High School wrote the winning essays for this year's scholarship event. The awards were presented by the Master of Ceremonies and Warren Mayor Michael O'Brien. In addition to the scholarship, United States Congressman Tim Ryan, who is also a member of the AOH, had Division President Jay Bice present each student with an American flag and Congressional Certificate of Acknowledgement on his behalf. Bice said of the event, "The entire atmosphere helped celebrate the Irish heritage bring to light the resilience of the Irish, pride in our ancestry and the positive contributions the Irish have made in our community and in America." Despite the snow storm and hazardous road conditions, over 100 people attended the event and were entertained during the traditional Irish breakfast with Irish music and Irish step dancers from Burke's School of Irish Dance. The Ancient Order of Hibernians is the oldest ethnic-based charitable organization in the United States and is also the largest Irish fraternal organization in the world. Anyone interested in joining this Irish Catholic men's organization can contact Division President Jay Bice at 330-372-1554 or bicewarren@aol.com.

Come to Community Adoption Information meeting
Northeast Ohio Adoption Services, (NOAS), invites area singles or couples to an informal Community Adoption Information Meeting in Lisbon. It is for families who want to know more about the adoption of Ohio's school aged children. The meeting is set for Wednesday evening, April 16, between 5-7 p.m. at Columbiana County Career and Technical Center in the Library Room, 9364 State Route 45, a mile south of Lisbon. The atmosphere will be relaxed, and people are free to stop in anytime so that they can pick up information packets and talk to staff members. They can learn more about the needs of children in care of the child welfare system, and learn about the possibilities of becoming an adoptive parent of a school aged child, teen, or sibling group. NOAS does not charge fees to families for adoption. In Ohio 6,000 children, mostly school aged, are now waiting for a permanent, loving family. Adults over the age of 21 are eligible to adopt through NOAS with no upper age limit. Adoptive parents may live in a home, mobile home, apartment, or condo, and they may either own it or rent it. Adoptive parents will need a stable, but not necessarily high income. Reservations are requested for the Community Adoption Information Meeting. Please call 1-800-686-6627, ext. 126 for details, to get an information packet by mail, or to register to come to the Community Adoption Information Meeting. Since it was founded in 1978, NOAS has found loving families for over 1,100 children. Visit NOAS online at www.noas.com.

I've been blessed as a teacher to have the opportunity to work with many talented and unique students. To be actively engaged in the learning process is really quite exciting. Nothing is more rewarding, however, than when you have an individual who goes above and beyond what is expected of them. While teaching the class how to produce a business letter, I mentioned the fundraiser the school was hosting for a teacher at our school who is currently battling cancer. Miss Mackenzie Pallante decided to write to the head coach at the University of Michigan. She wrote a very thoughtful letter explaining what was taking place and asked if he would be willing to contribute to our heartfelt cause. Mackenzie and her family are huge Michigan fans, so needless to say she anxiously awaited a response. I am very delighted to report that she received an autographed picture from Coach Rodriguez. She and her family took the picture, framed it, and put together an awesome Michigan basket to be raffled off at the game. I may have taught her how to write a successful business letter, but it was her enthusiastic endeavor that was a lesson of inspiration for all. Mrs. Jill Hoover Reed Middle School 6th Grade Teacher
