There were a lot of great boxers coming form this area over the years, but for some, their names have gone by the way-side and are now long forgotten. In the following weeks, there were many good ones whose names I will write about and many boxing people will recall and hopefully these stories will refresh the boxing elite's memory, especially the fighters coming form the so called Steel Valley Area. Imaginary Line If one, especially a boxing fan would make an imaginary line form Cleveland, go south to Steubenville, then cross the Ohio River and head into Pittsburgh. Form there go north to Erie, then go west back to Cleveland. You would be enriched to find out the great fighters form that circumference of and they were definitely among the best. Youngstown's Charles "Chuck" Higgins One of the area's best in the 40's-50's was Youngstown's "Chuck" Higgins. Higgins was form Youngstown but fought his professional career in Ellwood city, under the guidance of legendary boxer-manager Johnny Loccisano. Loccisanno was also a boxing promoter. Loccisano was a staunch supporter of boxing on the big time level and over the years had a great boxing stable of his own. Although at his point, Higgins amateur record is unknown, but he did fight outstanding fighters like Tony Necro and Bobby Hughes. Tough Professional Fighter In the professional ranks, Higgins emerged on a pro career on January 10, 1947 with one-round knockout over Jack White. His last professional fight was on September 23, 1955 in an eight-round loss to George Boddie in Cleveland. In all, Chuck Higgins had 30 professional bouts, won 25, loss 5 and knocked out 15 opponents. Won 18 in a row Higgins was a hard puncher and started out in great fashion in the pro ranks. He won his first 18 bouts before he lost to Marion Klingensmith in Pittsburgh over the six-round limit. Later Higgins avenged that loss by defeating Klingensmith. And there are those who remember Charley Burley, the uncrowned middleweight champion whom many top-flight fighters shied away from, but Higgins tried the test but was beaten by Burley, who many say was the best. Beat Some of the Best Higgins had impressive wins over the likes of Niles hard hitting Mike Birskovich, Akron's Eddie Elton, Jimmy Guy, and Willie Cheatum to just mention a few. One of the Best Charles "Chuck" Higgins was one of the area's best and was tough middleweight and a good one. When mentioning area fighters, the name Charles "Chuck" Higgins should never be forgotten. No question he joins the Steel Valley's best.

HELP meeting and Spring Cleanup in Hubbard
With the Spring season newly upon us, HELP would like to remind the community that it is a great time to clean up, clean out, recycle and re-plant. There is no excuse not to take advantage of all the opportunities that we have at our disposal. We have two great recycling locations in our area, one behind the Hubbard Fire Station and the other at the Hubbard Twsp. Administration Building. These recycling centers have been greatly improved as they now take all plastics from #1 through #7 as well as the typical metals, newspapers, cardboard and magazines. They also accept computer paper, bagged shredder paper and mail envelopes, cellophane and all. For those of you who have tires, hazardous household waste, computer equipment and fluorescent light bulbs, not to worry. The Geauga-Trumbull solid Waste District will be starting up very soon in early May to accept these items. They will also have an Appliance drop-off day as well. For more information you can access their website at www.startrecycling.com. As we understand it, Hubbard City and Township will have a scrap tire day some time in May as well. For all of those other items just a little good to toss, have a garage sale and recycle all of these items back into the community. Who knows, you may make a couple dollars at it. Don't forget that the Spring time is a great time to plant. You know that we have too much CO2 in our atmosphere. What better way to do your part and plant a tree to help absorb some of this excess CO2. Don't forget about the flowers too. As a final note, thanks to all those who are now recycling and taking care of their property. Let's all work together to keep our community clean and safe and a good place to call home. Remember that it's not good enough not to want a Landfill in our back yard. We must all work together to find solutions to limit what we throw in the ground. Sincerely, Hubbard Environmental & Land Preservation
