SCORE-Counselors to America's small business

National Volunteer Week is being celebrated this week by the local SCORE office (Counselors to America's Small business) as they continue their over 43 years of free business counseling for area people when they start their own businesses.
The office is located on the campus of Youngstown State University and was started one year after the U.S. Small Business Administration opened its first office. Today the national organization has 370 offices with over 10,000 counselors.
Locally there are 35 men and women counselors with Dr. Terry Deiderick being the only remaining Charter Member. Dr. Deiderick is retired from YSU as a professor and Marketing Dept. Chair in the Williamson School of Business at YSU.
The members have a wide variety of business skills and positions including educators, bank officers, sales reps, research librarians, engineers, CPA accountants, human resource managers, corporate attorneys and business owners in various retail, wholesale and services industries.
The business counseling is done by a team of four or five volunteer retired business executives with not just 45 years of experiences (one counselor), but perhaps 225 years of business expertise and wisdom. The information is free, professional and confidential and usually concerns starting a new business, solving problems of a business in trouble or it could be a business growing too fast and they do not know how to grow effectively and safely.
The topics discussed can include new technologies, advertising, publicity, financing, management techniques, research, marketing, human resources, developing persuasive business plans or other business related topics.
Youngstown SCORE services are available to residents of Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana and Ashtabula counties in Ohio, plus residents of Mercer and Lawrence counties in Pennsylvania. To make an appointment or for more information call 330-746-2687. Additional information may be found at

The Nine of Us

In Budapest, a man goes to the pastor and complains, "Life is unbearable. There are nine of us living in one room. What can I do?"
The pastor answers, "Take your goat into the room with you."
The man in incredulous, but the pastor insists. "Do as I say and come back in a week."
A week later the man comes back looking more distraught than before. "We cannot stand it," he tells the pastor. "The goat is filthy."
The pastor then tells him, "Go home and let the goat out. And come back in a week."
A radiant man returns to the pastor a week later, exclaiming, "Life is beautiful. We enjoy every minute of it now that there's no goat-- only the nine of us.

Sound of the Square County Chorus

CONTRIBUTED PHOTO.

Sounds of Square County chorus will be having guest nights on April 30th and May 7th. We invite women of all ages--over the age of 11-to join us. The chorus is an affiliate chapter of Harmony, Inc. which is an international organization of women who love to sing barbershop harmony. The chorus offers its services for many groups and organizations. A minimal fee is charged for the performances allowing us to help provide support to two local charitable organizations.
We got our name from the fact that Trumbull County is the only square county in Ohio, but we have members from Mahoning County and western PA as well. The common denominator is a love of music and singing. The director is Bob Grischow, who has directed both male and female groups. Meredith Elliot, the assistant director, directs two church choirs in the area.
The group meets at 7 p.m. on Wednesday night at Trinity Lutheran Church in Niles. The church is located at 56 N. Chestnut St. The motto of Harmony, Inc. Is " A Blend With Friendship" Come and find fun and friendship with us as we sing in four part harmony. Call Doris at 330-544-2252 or Terry at 330-544-0242 for more information or to book the chorus for your upcoming function.
