Student donates hair to help children with cancer
Thank you-Cold Stone Creamery. When Delilah sheared the locks from Samson, he lost all of his strength. When the Cosmetology students at the TCTC cut Jim Infante's hair, he gained a $20 gift certificate from the Cold Stone Creamery. Who says things were better in the old days. Infante is a junior from Liberty enrolled in Engineering Tech Prep. For the past three years, no barber in the area could claim him as a regular customer. He stated, "With the exception of an occasional trim, I wore my hair very, very long. It was part of my identity." Students in the Cosmetology program convinced Infante to shed his locks for a most worthy cause. They talked with him about becoming a volunteer for Wigs for Kids. This organization seeks donation of hair to make wigs for children undergoing radiation treatment for cancer. Infante's motivation was intrinsic because he had no advance knowledge that he would receive a gift certificate. He said, "The more that I thought about little kids who needed a wig, the less I wanted to keep my long hair. I can always let my hair grow, but they don't have this option. It feels good to help someone." If you should never judge a book by its cover, the same holds true for people. The length of someone's hair is not an indication of the degree of empathy they have for others. What Jim Infante lost in hair, he gained in stature.
