May the end of the week bring warm temperatures and sunny days as we all need a true break from the cold winter and the snow. The promise of spring and summer is always something my mother Jane and our family enjoyed most. I hope that the Easter season was a joyous time together for all with family and friends near. A friend reminded me during the holiday that Every Day was a day to celebrate. I think I'll keep that in mind.

Now That's Gallavantin'

How grateful I am for the flowers,
That bring forth new blossoms each day,
May the season come swiftly to cheer us,
As we walk in God's garden and pray.
Churches in our community were beautifully adorned with spring flowers for Easter services this past week. The colors of purple, pink, and white hyacinths, tulips of every shade, the beautiful white Easter lily, and bright yellow daffodils made the "inside" garden something inspirational in and of itself reminding us of the promise of spring amidst snow-covered streets and yards. As we put a few Easter decorations in our yard, I did see the purple crocus peeping through probably wondering if this was the right season after all. Let's hope that the spring will soon be in full bloom as the robin seems to chirp each morning the need for green trees instead of snowy branches.
Church services and Easter Egg Hunts are all a part of the joyous celebrations that involve families of our community. Many family members return home just for the Sunday services. Andrew and Erin Stevens, busy studying at their separate colleges, spent Easter with mom and dad, Janice and Dan Stevens. Andrew is studying Engineering and will be graduating soon from Akron University. Danielle DeChant, a recent graduate of YSU in the Science field and continuing her education there in the nursing field for her Master's degree, shared the day with sister Jacqueline, soon to graduate from Girard High School, and their parents Colleen and Joey DeChant. Nick Giancolo, a graduate of YSU, lent his vocal skills to the Girard Methodist Church Choir as did Heidi Davis also a YSU graduate and studying at Kent for her Master's Degree in voice. Both spent time with their families celebrating the Easter Day. Many families took the opportunity to vacation in warmer climates together since most schools are off for a week. Probably a good idea since the weather wasn't cooperating here.
A special thank you to the instrumentalists that played in many community churches for Easter services. Perry Tarantine, Greg Rezabek, Joe MacBenn, Michael Kelly, and Whitney Graft contributed much to the music at the Methodist church accompanying selected music conducted by choir director Jim Antell and daughter April Tarantine. Bonnie Hood, organist from the Girard United Methodist Church, celebrates 25 years of service to the church as organist this month. Congratulations to Bonnie, also a French teacher at Maplewood High School for over 30 years. Her husband Joe, daughter Erin and son Chris must be extremely proud of Bonnie for not only being an expert teacher and musician but a wonderfully caring individual who has been so encouraging to many young musicians and a friend to many. Bonnie has played for many services and extra events over the years including Youth Club Musicals, Theater Ministry Productions, weddings, funerals, anniversaries, and a variety of special programs and events. Best wishes on many more years of organ and piano playing at the church. The choir and congregation extends love and thanks to you for all you have done to share your talents with all.
It is difficult enough when an adult is ill but when children have health problems it seems that the concern is ten times greater. Recently Jaret Spelich was in the hospital and is now at home and would appreciate some cards. Jessica and Jashua Shepherd had their tonsils out and are recovering at home. Suzette Thomas is at Akron's Children's hospital and will be undergoing heart surgery and the family needs support. Contact your local church if you know of someone in need of help that has been hospitalized in our community. Because of the Privacy Act, hospitals are no longer permitted to contact local pastors concerning congregation members in need of help. Neighbors, family, and friends must call the patient's church to notify them. Care T earns exist in most churches in our town and are ready to help families and patients in need of assistance but they sometimes are not aware of individuals needing help. A call to the patient's church office will help.
