author of one of the books is usually there to give students an idea of what it takes to become a writer. The Festival is both fun and educational for students in many grade levels. Reading and analyzing what you have read is a primary focus of the Festival. English teachers from all the area schools get a chance to work with their students in a more concentrated way for the Festival in preparing students for the many ways the books are presented throughout activities of the day. the first weekend in May. One is at the Girard First Christian Church and the other is at the Girard First United Methodist Church. Donations of items will be gladly received at either church. Call to find out how to donate your used items. Pick up may also be available. Track and Field, softball, and baseball seem to be the sports of choice for young and old alike at this time of year. Support your teams and events by attending the games or events held this season. The track at the high school along with the field is currently under construction and if you haven't driven by Girard High School Arrowhead Stadium, take time to see the changes being made. We hope that it will be ready in time for the fall sports season. Teams now are practicing and competing on nearby fields at other schools. Call the school for a schedule of spring sports or contact Athletic Director Joe Cappuzzello. Joe recently lost his mother Margarita Cappuzzello, at the age of 85. She leaves a legacy of a wonderful family of 5 children, Joe, Paul, George, Georganne, and Mary with many grandchildren as well. Margarita and her husband were long time residents of Girard living very close to the Girard Stadium for many years. Sympathy is extended to the family. Jane Mason is at Liberty Health Care Center and could use some cards. Dr. "Deets" Delbene, Sr., is home now after being hospitalized with heart problems. Wife Chris is nursing him back to good health but both could use some support from friends with notes and cards. Girard High School Prom is May 9 at Leo's Restaurante this year. A Cedar Point Trip is planned for the following day for Seniors and Juniors. Scholarship Awards this year for Seniors of the Class of 2008 will be given at a luncheon to be held at the Mahoning Country Club. Letters are being sent to those giving scholarships. Students are always in need of financial assistance with costs rising on college and university campuses. Girard Alumni, organizations, businesses, and others may want to consider giving a scholarship. Scholarships do not have to be huge amounts of money. Students and families are pleased just to be honored by an individual or group. Perhaps your family, business, or other organization would like to give a small monetary contribution to a student in memory or honor of someone. Even small donations add up when students receive several from different sources. Even small amounts can be put towards school expenses such as books. Take time to think about giving a scholarship to a deserving student. It will be greatly appreciated. Call the high school and contact the guidance department, Guidance Counselor Angela Cochran, or high school principal William Ryser at 330-545-5431. Graduation is fast approaching with May not far away and many activities jamming the calendar for the brief weeks ahead. Graduation is Sunday, June 1, and because of construction on the field, will be held in the High School Gymnasium rain or shine. Testing in the junior high and elementary is scheduled for the next two weeks. Parents need to encourage their children to do well on the Ohio Achievement Tests. Eating breakfast increases their chances of doing well and getting enough sleep especially when they are working on these tests. The ability to concentrate and answer correctly increases with well-rested students. Encouragement from parents is also a key factor in achieving success on these tests. Teachers, staff, students, and parents work hard at achieving success with these tests. Good luck to all. My mother Jane loves the springtime and especially enjoys the magnolias blooming now and in the days ahead. I will probably take her a branch from our backyard tree, when it opens a bit more, as I did last year. The blossoms don't last long though, but they are truly beautiful and are a welcome fanfare to spring's entrance. Enjoy the beauty of the season as it lasts only a short time. As my mother improves slightly, I hope to take her outside at least for a short time by Autumn Hills. Enjoy the Spring.

My hometown's a lovely place, The years here to abide, Much love and caring can be found, Just living side by side.
As the weather plays tricks on us deciding on Warm or cold, the daffodils, blue forget-me-nots, and purple crocus are peeking through. My mother Jane always loved seeing the first blooms of springtime especially the magnolia tree in our yard. I hope the blooms are left to grow to their full budding beauty since last year they were destroyed by sudden cold, definitely not welcome in the springtime months. The grass is beginning to be a little greener, the trees are starting to show signs of new life, and the flowering shrubs in most yards are trying their best to bloom. Not having to bundle up to go for a walk around the yard would be a treat for us all. Let's hope that the Warm weather will make up its mind to stay. Blue skies and sunshine surely brighten everyone's spirits after a long and dismal winter. Teams for Destination Imagination competing at the State Tournament in Barberton last week represented Girard City Schools well though neither the high school team or the junior high team was able to advance to the Global (International) Tournament in May held in Knoxville, Tennessee. It sometimes takes a few trips to the State competition in order to achieve success. Some local teams from the area did go on in their divisions including Badger high school and St. Stephens Middle School in Niles. Competition is difficult at the State Level as Ohio has one of the largest State Tournaments of Destination Imagination. There were over 175 teams competing from all areas of the State. The creativity and preparation of all teams was outstanding and the many volunteer judges must have had a difficult time in each division deciding on the winning teams. Congratulations to all the participating teams as State Finalists and to the parents, team managers, volunteers, judges, and State Governing Board members for their hard work to create a successful tournament. Good luck to those teams moving on to Global Finals. The Girard Methodist Church served over 270 Creamed Chicken Dinners on Saturday, April 12. Those working on the dinner raised over $1600 to be used to held with many church needs. Thank you to all who worked on the dinner and to all in the community who attended and made the event a success. The Annual Girard High School Civics Day was held on Friday, April 11. Student participants held a mock Girard Board of Education meeting and Girard City Council meeting for the student body to learn more about how city government works. Elected student candidates and appointees worked with their city counterparts to present an agenda and conduct a meeting similar to those of the actual City Councilor Board of Education. Students watched the meetings and were permitted to ask questions and participate in the Public Participation segments of each meeting. After the meetings presented in the Girard High School auditorium, the students participating in Civics Day were taken to the Girard City Building to view a mock trial in the courtroom there. Again, students took their places as judge and city prosecutor and conducted a mock trial. A luncheon was served at 12:15 in the American Legion Hall across from the Girard City Building with student participants and City Official Counterparts also in attendance. The meal was served by students members of Teen Institute from the high school. Girard Mayor Jim Melfi was unable to be with student mayor Brett Cubellis this year since he was with the St. Rose School students in Washington, D.C. The luncheon and other events of the day were organized and hosted by high school social studies teachers Renny Poalone, also President of Girard City Council, and Joe Naples. Congratulations to all participants. This week the Youngstown State University English Festival will take place. Students from Girard Junior High School and Girard High School will be competing in events based on their knowledge of books from a YSU generated list formulated specifically for the Festival. Students were expected to read the books on the listed over a period of several weeks in preparation for the Festival. Students compete individually and as a team for prizes which are awarded to top students at the end of the day. Writing, communication, creativity, and over all knowledge of the books is "tested" through many interesting activities including Not So Trivial Pursuit, Writing Games, and Essays as well as several other categories in which students take part.
