Orthodox observing Easter on April 23
Eastern Orthodox churches in the area and around the world will observe Easter on Sunday, April 27 and will hold daily during Holy Week which begins this Palm Sunday, April 20. The Rev. Thomas Constantine announced the following Holy Week schedule for St. John Greek Orthodox Church in Boardman. Similar services are scheduled for other Eastern Orthodox churches. Pre-sanctified liturgies at 10 a.m. and Bridegroom service at 7 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, April 21-22-23 with the Holy Unction service for children at 4 p.m. on Wednesday. On Holy Thursday, April 24, the Vesperal Liturgy for the Last Supper will take place at 6 a.m, and the 12 Gospel service will begin at 7 p.m. Several services are planned for Holy Friday, April 25 with the Royal Hours at 9 a.m. during which the ladies of he church will decorate the "Epitaphio" (the tomb of Christ) after the service. At 4 p,m. the Vespers of the "Apokathelosis" (Rotting Christ) will be held and at 7 p.m. the Lamentation Service. On Holy Saturday, April 26, the "Proti Anastasi" (First Resurrection) will take place a 9:30 a.m. In he evening, the Ressurection service will take place at 11:45 p.m. with the priest chanting "Come Receive the Light" followed by parishioners chanting "Christos Anesti" (Christ has Risen). The liturgy and the Resurrection breakfast will follow. On Holy Pascha (Easter) on Sunday, April 27, the Agape Service will take place at 11 a.m. with the Easter Gospel being given in several other languages besides Greek and English. A candy hunt for the children will follow.
