Monday, April 7 the Beeghly College of Education at YSU unveiled student artwork to be permanently displayed in the building. Partners in Art solicited donors for the framing of the art submitted by area schools. Five Liberty High School students and two from W. S. Guy Middle School were honored at the reception. Each student received a certificate and a signed copy of a book illustrated by the event's speaker, Kadir Nelson, a Caldicott Award winning artist. The work by LHS students Maggie Charles, Tammy Chevlen, Trintess Huffman, Patrick McGarry and Kevin Mirkin is on display on the third floor of Beeghly Hall as are pieces by Josh Vannoy and Shatalia Davis of W.S. Guy. What a thrill for all these students to be recognized and feted at our local university. Congratulations to all of them.

A bird's eye view of the Liberty Plaza area as it is now. Still seen on the west side are Arby's, Taco bell and Antones. On the north side those businesses from Sav-A-Lot to Belmont Avenue are still visible. Photo by Arthur Marsh.

Fifty years of memories of all the stores and shopping of the Liberty Plaza have been knocked down and carted away. The Five and Dimes, the high end clothes, the movie theater, Baskin Robbins, and so much more. All gone now and Liberty looks to the future with a new Wal*mart Super Store and remake of the rest of the plaza. The plaza was fifty years old in 2007. It was the place to go in its time. Who knows with the change in economics and the price of gas rising, it may become the place to go again.

A crowd that was about equally made of parents and students attended the meeting at LHS on Thursday, Apr. 24. This was not a meeting to decide anything but rather to gather information from the district. Liberty at the present time does not have a formal dress code but policies which have evolved. A dress code that would be specific and clearly stated is the objective. This requires that input from the public be given and considered. A number of very good views were stated and some problems were brought forth that were not known before. It is now up to the superintendent to formulate a plan and submit it to the BOE. This may happen at the May meeting. There will be notification if action is to be taken.
