Rain Garden to be installed at Agricultural Center
The annual 'Springtime at the Garden' will be held on Saturday May 10 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Trumbull County Agriculture and Family Education Center at 520 West Main Street in Cortland. This 'Free' event serves to kick off this year's outdoor activities at the center which is located near the eastern shore of Mosquito Lake next to the Delphi plant and Hillside Cemetary. At 10:30 a.m. there will also be an installation of a permanent Rain Garden at the Center. Bob Kernes of Ohio Prairie Nursery will install a 100 square foot Rain Garden and will demonstrate and speak about its effectiveness with water runoff. Rain Gardens are a newer concept type of garden which is gaining in popularity. Rain gardens are dug a little deeper into the ground than your traditional garden. Amy Reeher, Watershed Coordinator of the Trumbull SWCD said, "Basically what we're trying to do is improve the filtration of the water into the soil structure. Rain garden looks like any other garden, but they are better for the environment." Storm water runs off the roof of a home or commercial building into the rain garden down below. And then the plants clean the water. Reeher said, "It's amazing the soil structure itself can break down the pollutants and the plants will use it and the water is much cleaner when it finally reaches a creek or stream." Experts say if every home and business had one there would be virtually no problems with polluted storm water getting into our rivers. The Trumbull Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) is funding the installation. "The SWCD receives many calls about the 'Rain Garden' concept and felt it was important enough to locate one at our facility and the Center's advisory committee agreed," stated Mike Wilson , Executive Director of the SWCD. Annual, and perennial plants will be available for sale at the event, along with a variety of herbs, typertufas and mossed baskets by the Master Gardeners of Trumbull County. Vendors will be on hand offering handcrafted items and vintage and primitive collectibles. Lunch will also be available. Other demonstrations and programs will occur throughout the event featuring Master Gardeners Kathleen Evanoff, Frank Thompson, and Debbie Jones. For more information on the 'Springtime at the Garden' event please call Kathleen Farris at 330- 637- 2288, and for more info on 'Rain Gardens' contact Amy Reeher at the Trumbull Soil & Water Conservation District at 330- 637- 2056 Extension 111.
