Area H.S. student select as Scholar at Ashland University
Lindsey Callahan of Niles was selected to attend a one-day seminar at Ashland University as a 2008 Teacher Education Scholar. A junior at Niles High School, Callahan is the daughter of Kirk and Vickie Callahan of 714 Cherry Street. Teacher Education Scholars were selected after having been nominated by a teacher or school administrator. Selections were based on each student's academic achievements. The scholars attended a variety of seminars on education, while parents attended informational sessions about topics such as AU admissions, financial aid and student life. Ashland University is a private, comprehensive institution located in north central Ohio between Cleveland and Columbus. On-campus enrollment is nearly 2,150 undergraduate students while total enrollment, including graduate and off-campus centers, is more than 6,500.

His Music Connection Concert

Spaghetti Dinner
The GHS class of '66 presents its first annual spaghetti dinner at the St. Rose School cafeteria, 48 East main St. in Girard. The dinner will be Sunday, May 18 from 11:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. with the cost being $6.50 for adults and $3.50 for children age 6 and under. The dinner includes spaghetti and meatballs, salad, bread and butter, dessert and coffee, plus $1 for soda or bottled water.

Rep. Harwood announces Professional Development Grants
State Rep. Sandra Stabile Harwood of Niles announced that the eTech Ohio Commission has awarded grants to several schools to educate teachers on how to effectively integrate technology in the classroom. The following schools will receive the funds: Girard, Hubbard, Lakeview, Liberty, Lordstown, Mathews, McDonald, Niles and Weathersfield.

Liberty High hosts Darfur speaker at YSU
The Global Action and Awareness Club of Liberty High will be holding a fundraising event at Ford Auditorium at Bliss Hall on the campus of YSU. The event will be held on Monday, May 12. Doors open at 6 p.m. the program will begin at 7 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.

Coast Guard Eastern Great Lakes Water Safety Expo
The U.S. Coast Guard Station Ashtabula will be hosting the first annual Eastern Great Lakes Water Safety Expo Saturday, May 17 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the USCG Station Ashtabula, 401 Morton Dr. in Ashtabula. This free event is open to the general public and will feature tours of the Coast Guard Station as well as free U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary recreational vessel safety inspections. Come join the Coast Guard and observe the hard working men and women of the U.S. Coast Guard in action. League of Women Voters of Trumbull County Meeting
The League of Women Voters of Trumbull County will be holding their 68th Annual Meeting on Saturday, May 17, at the Cafe 422 at 10 a.m. The speaker for the annual meeting will be the Honorable Mary Jane Trapp, Judge with the 11th District Court of Appeals.
