Dr. William Brady speaks at Lake Vista

By Joyce Seagle

How does the word hypnosis strike you? Many people cringe at the thought. Too often their experience with this phenomenon has been negative or even frightening.
This was once true of William A. Brady, PhD (of Dr. William A. Brady and Associates  of North Bloomfield, OH), but he believes the time has come for the public to rearrange its thinking on the subject.
Speaking to an audience in Cortland, he defined hypnosis as an altered state of consciousness, adding that actually we accomplish this each time we go to sleep and enter a half-sleep/full-sleep stage.
Dr. Brady narrated a brief history of hypnosis, which had its beginnings long before Christ walked the earth. Interest in it grew in the 18th and 19th centuries as Franz Mesmer and James Baird attempted to explain and utilize it. Then for a long time, there was little action in the field. Then in the 20th century, after World War I, it was used more frequently to help people with memory problems. In the 1940s and 1950s hypnosis earned a bad reputation as it was used as entertainment in places such as night clubs, television shows and private parties. As a child, Dr Brady had his first encounter with hypnosis in a local theater where he was asked to be an audience participant. The hypnotist was a fake and the event left Dr. Brady a non-believer.
Later on, as he worked as the Speech Pathologist at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Youngstown, he began to delve deeper into the concept of hypnosis and today he recognizes its authenticity and thinks of it as a very useful tool in treating certain problems.
He de-bunked many myths about this subject and provided facts that might help someone in need of treatment:
Fact: No one can be hypnotized against his will.
Fact: Hypnosis will not make a person do anything against his will.
Fact: A person will always emerge from a hypnotic state.
Fact: Hypnosis is now accepted and used by medical doctors and dentists.
Fact: Hypnosis is not a miraculous, instantaneous cure. It is a tool to help in healing.
Fact: Situations where hypnosis can be helpful are the easing of pain,  stage fright, trauma, attitude change toward something specific, addictions, speech and/or swallowing problems.
Lake Vista (located at 303 N. Mecca St. in Cortland) hosted this event as part of its
Breakfast at the Lake series.  The public is invited to the next scheduled event: Feb. 15 at 9:30 a.m. at the clubhouse, no admission fee. The speaker will be Vincent Schuyler, Senior Service Unit Coordinator and the topic will be Scams, Fraud, Social Service and Senior Levy. Questions? 330-638-2420.
