Cortland Community Band Notes
By Janice Powell Hill

With all the February snow we missed a couple practices, but now we're back into the swing of things and working on songs for our summer concerts. Just thinking about summer makes me smile. The older I get the less I like the snow, and this winter has been a real bugger. Oh well, back to music. We've got lots of good music, thanks to our librarian Garey Watson, who puts a great deal of effort into securing new songs and switching our folders from winter to summer. We really appreciate all you do for us, including all the great notes that come out of your trumpet! Love to hear those solos.
We're kicking off our summer concert season on Friday, June 6th at the Cortland Relay for Life. Also we will be playing at the Cortland Street Fair this year and we're really excited to once again be part of this fun event. July 2nd will find us at Howland Scope and on July 16th we'll be at the Viets Strawberry Festival. Please check our website for more info on upcoming concerts.
We'll also be selling Scrappers tickets again this year, so if you go to the games, please contact a Cortland Band member and we'll get you tickets which can be used for any of the games.
The Cortland Band is really blessed with some outstanding musicians. We have several retired music teachers and current music teachers that are a great asset to our band. Also musicians from all walks of life that come together to make beautiful music and enjoy each other's company. So if you think you might like to come visit, please do. There's no tryouts. All you need is a band instrument, the love of music, and be available on Wednesday nights from 7 to 9 pm. We meet during the school year at the Cortland Middle School on Wakefield Dr. Just park in the back and come on in. When you're near us you'll hear us.

No Matter what a person's thoughts are on Muhammad Ali, whether it is pro or con, you have to admit he brought the fight game back in what now many think could have been the best heavyweight division of all times. That-the experts will dictate.
Ali, for a big man was exceptionally fast and did have loads of talent. It was rare to see a heavyweight boxer like him. His footwork was superb and his hand speed was excellent was excellent and he fought the best, never ducking a fighter.
Locally, Kelly "The Ghost" Pavlik seems to have excited the local interest that has now expanded to the national level. The fight game could use such an opening.
Pavlik's latest win over a very tough Jermaine Taylor proved he could go the distance and did opening the eyes of the boxing world.
The payday's should come in big for Pavlik and as the old saying is said "He paid his dues." His popularity has sky-rocketed in the fight game and fans are ready to find out who his next opponent will be, we all are.
Carlos Monzon
One of the brightest boxers of the modern era was the talented Carlos Monzon. He was a middleweight who was one of the most devastating punchers in the game.
Where does he rank in the category as one of the great bangers of all time? He has a place among the best. He had a tremendous record in the middleweight division and his name is often referred to when talking boxing, as one of the best.
Monzon had a professional record of 89 wins, three losses and 61 knockouts and nine draws and one no-contest. He won the Argentine middleweight title by outpointing Jorge Fernandez in 12 rounds and defended his title 14 times and he also won a world title by knocking out tough Nino Benevenuti in the twelfth round. Monzon retired undefeated in 1977 and will go down in history as one of the best. When he beat Fernandez, that was for the Argentina championship before he beat Benevenuti.
One of the Area's Best
In a recent conversation concerning some local  fighters that made the big time, many are often over looked. One such fighter was one that fared well in the featherweight and the lightweight division was Warren's Joey Salcone. A many time Golden Glove champion and slick boxer with an excellent left hook, Salcone had a good professional record and fought some of the best in his division in Florida. One tough fighter he fought was the Cuban champion Echevarria. Salcone was one of Jack Thompson's early fighters and one who had a large following.
Another tough amateur form the Niles area who recently passed away was Joey Ramer. Ramer was an excellent fighter from the Niles Police A.C. and won Golden Glove titles. He had well over 50 fights and lost very few. Reamer was part of the Niles Police A.C. under Matt McGowan who gym left the boxing world was a member of one of the finest boxing stables in the country. Ramer also fought in the Cleveland Golden Gloves and fared well. In addition to Ramer was another tough fighter from the Niles area, Bill Bradley. Bradley was a heavy hitter and he too also had a lot of amateur fights winning over big time fighters and he too fought in several Golden Glove tournaments Bradley is deceased but his name comes to bear when talking boxing another one of Matt McGowan's fighters in the late forties and early fifties.
