First Robotics Regional

Girard High School, along with Warren and Champion High Schools will compete in the Pittsburgh FIRST Robotics Regional on March 14-25 at the University of Pittsburgh and on March 20-21 at Cleveland State University. Chaney will also compete in Cleveland.
Each team will compete in 6-10 preliminary matches on Friday and Saturday morning, with the top eight teams selecting alliance partners to compete with in finals beginning on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The event provides plenty of excitement and cheering as 50 teams from ___ states compete in a game called " " during which robots circle the field (called a track) to score points and/or remove a ball from an overpass and hurdle the ball over the overpass to earn additional points. Points are also awarded each time a robot crosses the "finish" line on the track, but additional points are also scored for each ball the team pushes across the finish line.
Reporters can also walk through the pits where each of the over 50 teams has a pit where they work on their robots between rounds and discuss strategies with alliance partners for future matches.
There are now 5 robotics team in our area and Girard, Warren, Chaney and Champion are all founding members of the Northeast Ohio FIRST Robotics Alliance (NEOFRA), a coalition aimed at sharing resources and best practices, conducting joint training for team members, and promoting and growing
FIRST in other schools throughout Northeast Ohio. Additionally Tim Ryan has appropriated $186,000 to enable other areas schools to start teams.
Girard and Warren captured the 2007 Buckeye Regional and all 3 teams won several other awards last season.
The
FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) challenges teams and their mentors to design, build and program a robot in a six-week timeframe using a standard "kit of parts" and a common set of rules. FIRST rewards students for excellence in design, demonstrated team spirit, gracious professionalism and maturity, entrepreneurship, and the ability to overcome obstacles. More information about FIRST can be found at www.usfirst.org.
Teams compete against over 2000 teams worldwide from the US, Canada, Brazil and South Africa at over 30 regionals with local teams competing against 50-80 other teams in regional at locations such at Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Toronto, Philadelphia, New Jersey, Virgina, and Michigan.
The World Championships, which all four local teams have attended in past years, are currently being held in Atlanta, GA and all teams have also competed at World Championships in Orlando and Houston.
The Pittsburgh event is at the Peterson Event Center and the Buckeye Event is at the Wolstein Center.
