Survey results show people are aware cancer screening
During February, the Tri County Community Cancer Partners (TCCP) conducted a 'Bowl For It' campaign at Crest Lanes in Warren. Bowlers were asked to complete a short, one-page survey to determine if they were aware of the importance of colorectal cancer screenings. "The results of the surveys showed that 68% of those who were age 50 or older already had a screening," said Jack Roberts, a committee member of the TCCP. "That's good news and better than the national average, which is about 50 percent." Also, the survey results for those 49 years of age and younger showed that half of those who completed the questionnaire exercised on a regular basis. Regular exercise plays an important role in reducing colorectal cancer and other types of cancers. "All of the results will be reviewed by the coalition later this month and a plan of action will be implemented so we may continue to educate people about the importance of colorectal cancer screenings in Mahoning, Trumbull & Columbiana Counties," Roberts added. Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death in America, but could be prevented if people were screened. During screenings polyps, from which colon cancers often develop, can be identified and removed before they become cancerous. March is colorectal cancer awareness month. According to the American Cancer Society, those who are 50 years of age or older should talk to their doctor about screenings. Those who are African American or with a family history of colorectal cancer should talk to their doctor earlier to determine when and what type of test is needed. There are a number of different screening tests available. This includes a colonoscopy, fecal occult blood test, sigmoidoscopy and barium enema. Doctors determine which test is appropriate for each person. Beside the American Cancer Society, other members of the TCCP are Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, General Motors-UAW Health Care Initiative, Humility of Mary Health Partners, the Lake to River Health Care Coalition, the Ohio Department of Health, Salem Community Hospital and Youngstown State University. For more information about colorectal cancer call the American Cancer Society toll free anytime at 1-800-ACS-2345 or visit the website at www.cancer.org.
