YSU's SMARTS Explore Love of Family and Friends
Two original operas created by Youngstown State University SMARTS-Students Motivated by the Arts students will be performed at 6 p.m. May 1 at the Ford Family Recital Hall in the DeYor Performing Arts Center, 260 Federal Plaza West in Youngstown. General Admission is $1 at the door. Two short operas were created in the SMARTS class "Telling Stories through Opera" by 40 first through twelfth-grade students, center around the love of family and friends as seen through the lives of every day characters. "The Friendly Caper" was created by first through third-graders and explores the main character's belief that he needs to steal in order to be accepted. "The Unexpected Birthday Gift," created by fourth through twelfth grade students, revolves around an elderly man who comes to live with his daughter's family. Both operas feature students from Youngstown and throughout our region, along with original music, sets, and dialogue that have been created in SMARTS Opera classes by these students. Several of this year's opera students have participated in the SMARTS Original Opera since its inception eight years ago. This year's production builds on the success of the past two years' work with two different age/grade groups. SMARTS students have participated in this public class for several months with writers beginning the process last fall. Students are responsible for all aspects of the opera, including documenting the project, which will be featured in an exhibit in the SMARTS Gallery after the performance. "We are excited to be able to encourage students of all ages to participate in the opera process. SMARTS has trained 10 teachers through the Metropolitan Opera Guild's Creating Original Opera program, and we have an excellent group of teachers this year, including two teachers new to SMARTS," said Becky Keck, SMARTS Director. The teachers are Mary Farragher, recent YSU graduate; Melissa Papini, local artist; Diana Farrell, current YSU graduate student; Corinne Morini, YSU part-time faculty member; and Joel Stigliano, current YSU student. "Our teachers are student-centered and aim to guide the young people in making their own artistic decisions. Audience members will be delighted by these original and evocative productions," said Kelly Bancroft, who has overseen all eight of the SMARTS operas as the SMARTS Coordinator. Kristi HappelChristian, SMARTS Program Assistant, worked extensively with teachers and students to produce this year's opera. For more information about SMARTS or to apply for arts education classes at the SMARTS Center, please call 330-941-2787 or visit the web at www.fpa.ysu.edu/smarts.
