Ohio State Representative Tom Letson met with Warren resident Carol Culp, who receives assistance at home through Ohio's Waiver program; Tina Henderson, Home Health Aide with Cambridge Home Health Care; and Sharonda Moore, Clinical Supervisor/Branch Manager with the Warren office of Cambridge Home Health Care. Representative Letson accepted an invitation from Cambridge Home Health Care in honor of National Home Care Month to learn first hand how home care services are meeting the health needs of individuals at home and also saving Ohio taxpayers: the average cost of in-home care is $12,600 a year; in a nursing home it would be more than $55,000 a year (statistic from Ohio Council for Home Care). Ms. Culp, age 49, has muscular dystrophy, scoliosis, and a pacemaker, and receives assistance through the Waiver program for four hours a day, seven days a week. Ms. Culp told Representative Letson, "Tina is very dependable. It means a lot to me to have an aide, or I wouldn't be able to get through the day. I can't comb my hair, and she helps me with a shower, does my cooking, gets me breakfast and lunch and prepares a plate for dinner, does laundry, cleans, and goes to the grocery store." Tina has been an aide for eight years and shared, "I really enjoy taking care of people." For more information, call 330-856-6900.

Master woodcarver, Joe Leonard, will exhibit works on Saturday, December 5 from Noon to 5:00 p.m. in Burton during the "Country Hearth Christmas" weekend festivities. A gallery and presentation space will be set up at Goodwin House Bed & Breakfast for this free event. Leonard and his staff carved the horses for the carousel at Euro-Disney in Paris. This carousel is one of the most ridden and photographed carousel rides in the world. Also well known for specialized and custom woodcarving for churches, television commercials and private commissions, Leonard has gained a world-wide reputation for superb and imaginative work. Two of Leonard's works are on traveling exhibit throughout the world, sponsored by The American Museum of Natural History as part of their Mythical Creatures exhibit. Beginning in New York City, Leonard's Armored Pegasus and Bronze Griffin then went to Chicago and Ottawa, Canada. The next venue, opening in a few weeks, is in Sydney Australia. The Mythical Creatures exhibit spends several months at each location. Upcoming venues include Atlanta and Toronto. At the close of the traveling exhibit in 2012, the Mythical Creatures will land in Cleveland. A continuous video presentation will show works in progress while Leonard personally describes his craft and answers questions in a small group setting. Artistic painter Liz Eustace will demonstrate the method of painting a carousel horse head. Many of Leonard's works will be pulled from other galleries to show during this special one-day event. Some items will be available for purchase. Joe Leonard also offers 5-day and 2-day woodcarving classes. The next class (Carousel Horse Head Carving) begins on Monday, December 7. For more information, contact Joe Leonard at (330) 527-2307, or www.JoeLeonard.com. Goodwin House Bed and Breakfast is located at the end of the merchant district block in Historic Burton. It is one of the few buildings in Geauga County listed independently on the National Register of Historic Places. It was built in about 1827 for Dr. Erastus Goodwin. Quite a bit of the original trim and floor plan remains today. The floors are planks of now nearly-extinct American Chestnut. Historic Burton Village is located at the intersection of State Routes 700/168 and Route 87, midway between Warren and Cleveland - about 35 miles East of downtown Cleveland. For more information about the one-day exhibit or Goodwin House, please contact Robyn Morris at 440-834-5050.

WOMAN'S RELIEF CORPS
A beautifully decorated Christmas table and the most delicious buffet luncheon preceded the December 2, 2009 meeting. Claudia York was our gracious hostess. Ten members were in attendance when the rap of the gavel by President Ruth Goddard opened the session. Chaplain Carol Goddard then opened the Holy Bible and read Psalm 112, followed by Patriotic Instructor Jackie Gore leading the corps in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. Relief committee was a general discussion of our activities; cards have been sent to Lenora Geist. Evelyn Minton will be our hostess for the first meeting in 2010. Ways and Means' Chinese Auction is going on now and will be completed today. A verbal report of our Veterans Day activities was given---We had 8 members there in full dress uniform and the program was truly patriotic. Mr. Hungerford, who began the program years ago, was present as an honored guest. He presented the school with a patriotic sculpture to be displayed in a prominent place. After the program the corps plus guests all enjoyed a lunch at J. D. Post House in Champion. Ways and Means committee for Jan., Feb., and March of 2010 was named: Carol Goddard, Mary Collier, and Evelyn Minton. Needed supplies were discussed---motion made and carried for secretary Margaret Lauth to obtain these supplies. Past-presidents will be held this month on Friday, December 18 at 1:00 p.m. at the Home Town Buffet in Warren, OH. Hostess will be Claudia York and we shall participate in a $3.00 gift exchange. Under the Good of the Order, P. I. Jackie Gore gave a big thank-you to all veterans and asked for daily prayers for all service people for all they do for us each and every day of their service. After a ritualistic closing of the meeting the Christmas gift exchange was completed with much enjoyment. Ways and Means then finished the Chinese Auction with many beautiful and useful objects being raffled off to any and all participants. It was truly a most enjoyable event.
