The BBB Urges Consumers To Be Cautious Of A Solicitation For Water Line Warranties
The Better Business Bureau is alerting Valley consumers to be cautious of a mailing sent by the company, Home Services USA. The mailer appears to be from the State of Ohio and offers a warranty on water lines going into the home. The BBB has received numerous calls questioning the legitimacy of the letter. The mailing appears to be from the State of Ohio, the county and city in which the recipient of letter resides. The mailer also states that the company accepts various forms of payment and urges those who are interested to respond by February 19. *The company's Reliability Report is under review pending the results of the BBB's current investigation of advertising issues. * The BBB offers the following advice to homeowners who may be considering home warranty coverage: Verify the warranty company's track record. Find out whether it's a local or national firm and how long it's been in business. Contact the BBB to find trustworthy businesses. Do some comparison-shopping. Most policies cost between $300 and $395. But not all offer the same benefits. You may find that some of the lower-priced policies charge extra for coverage of water wells and some appliances, such as washing machines and dryers. Consider the deductible. The industry average is $50 to $100 per claim. But some companies charge as much as $150 per call. Ask the company who will perform the repairs. Most warranty companies have their own network of service contractors. But some do allow you to hire a contractor of your choice. Be sure you understand the company policy before you buy the service. Get a detailed, impartial inspection of the house. This should be done regardless of whether you receive a home warranty. The inspection will alert you to any pre-existing problems, which may not be covered by the warranty. Call the warranty company before you buy a policy. Ask questions, clarify coverage and most importantly, see how the customer service representatives treat you. If they don't respond promptly and courteously before you buy a policy, odds are they won't be very helpful after the sale. Read the contract thoroughly. Make sure you fully understand what is or isn't covered. For more information, contact your BBB at 330.744.3111 or visit www.youngstown.bbb.org The BBB is an unbiased non-profit organization that sets and upholds high standards for fair and honest business behavior. Businesses that earn BBB accreditation contractually agree and adhere to the organization's high standards of ethical business behavior. The BBB provides objective advice, free business BBB Reliability ReportsTM and charity BBB Wise Giving ReportsTM, and educational information on topics affecting marketplace trust. Well, I saw my driveway last week for the first time in several days. Now, if the snow will just all melt so we're not left with piles of dirty, ugly stuff. City streets and major highways are also clear but we are left with something that no one likes-potholes! We probably all feel like we live in Pot Hole City, USA. I know there are very few streets where I live that doesn't have an abundance of pot holes. Have you noticed how they increase from day to day? Driving on these streets takes expert maneuvering and a watchful eye. I am sure the police have a hard time determining, is it a drunk driver or just a pot hole dodger driving down the street? Cold patching of holes is good for a short time but soon the holes are back and now, we may have damage to our vehicles. So, it's off to the repair shop, up on the rack and prepare yourself for the damage report. If you go to your city to complain and/or show them the repair bill, their answers are usually two-fold. Sorry, we are doing the best we can or we just don't have the funds available to fill them all. We all know here we go from here-yep, to the mechanic and hope we can cover the cost of repairs. This question is for those of us who are older drivers. You know, the "Old Fogey's" on the highway. Do you recall the highways being so bad in years past? Maybe it's just my memory but I've driven many a mile in many states and the highways just seem to get worse every winter. By the way, has anyone driven south on Rt. 11 recently? Well, I guess we should be extra thankful for our occasional short, mild Winters. However, when we consider the plight of people in other countries, especially those in Haiti, the aggravation of pot holes is as nothing. The devastation there and the loss of lives is beyond my comprehension. We should try to help however we can through reputable organizations and pray for those who have survived. On second thought, what's a few pot holes anyway. The Common Man Let me know what you think by sending your comments to mail@thereviewnewspapers.com
