The Multimedia Production (MP) program at Choffin Career and Technical Center is venturing into the world of news writing and creating moving news packages. Nate Schick, a video journalist for WYTV/WKBN in Youngstown, spoke to the MP program on Friday, March 7. Schick provided students an in depth look at what its like to work on the field of video/television production. Schick shared freelance stories from his days traveling with ESPN Golf and College Gameday to an emotional story of one of his golf shots making the SportsCenter Top Ten to how he eventually found his way back home here in Youngstown. The students were very interested to hear and see his work. Especially the very emotional news packages that were shown to the class as examples to help mold they're thinking of how to create their own news packages. According to Malcolm Simmons, MP student, "every shot that he chose, whether it was static or moving had a purpose. It really made me think more about choosing my shots and edits wisely." MP student, Alycia Pixley said, "it's always interesting to hear why a certain shot or edit was chosen. He (Schick) was very emotional and confident about his work" "Nate (Schick) is a true professional. It was nice to see his work hit home with my students. It really brought a lot of validity to this project and what we do in this program", MP Instructor Jeff Alberini stated. Schick has made himself available to Choffin students for any help with their news package projects and he hopes to come back to see the finished products. Choffin CTC is currently accepting applications for the Multimedia Production program. Please call 330-744-8700 or visit us on the web at www.choffincareer.com for more information. Choffin is half day open enrollment school.

93.6 inches of snow…. Is it global warming? By Mike Varveris
Mother Nature socked it to us this winter. A record 93 inches of snow in the Mahoning Valley this year, and probably more coming! Is it caused by "global warming?" The largest amount was dumped the weekend of March 7th with over a foot of the white stuff falling in the area on Saturday, March 8. Columbus was hit with nearly two feet of snow. That's unheard-of. Flights were cancelled as were high school basketball games in the state capital as well as many other scheduled events. The State Patrol reported some 1,914 automobile accidents credited to the storm. It was like summer the first week in December, and many of us hoped we may have a snow-free winter. Big deal! Did the so-called global warming cause all this record snowfall….with more coming? Remember last year's heavy wet snow in April at the Jake in Cleveland causing the cancellation of the game after the 4th inning with the Tribe ahead! There's more acres of ice in Arctic region this winter than ever before. Is this also the result of global warming? Heavy snowfall, hurricanes, tornadoes, tsunamis, record warmth in Alaska, 30 degrees in Florida, no rain in California, floods in the south, etc. Is it global warming or is Mother Nature trying to give us a hard time? Just asking.
