Area churches observe
Sunday of Orthodoxy

Seventeen area Eastern Orthodox churches observed the Sunday of Orthodoxy on   the first Sunday of the Eastern Orthodox Lent this year.
On this Sunday, each of the churches annually commemorate of the restoration of Icons of the church on Sunday morning with a special service that follows that includes a procession of the icons by the priest, altar boys, children and various officers of church organizations.
One of the 1y churches each year sponsors of Sunday of Orthodox Vespers on Sunday night that members and clergy of all 17 churches celebrate together. This year the vesper service took place at St, John Orthodox Church in Campbell. The homilist was Father John Harvey. The St. John choir led by Dr. Nicholas Nicoloff chanted the responses.
The dominant theme of the Sunday of Orthodoxy since the year 843 AD has been that of the victory of the Icons that had raged off and on since 726 AD.  This iconoclastic controversy was finally laid to rest of that in 843 which was the first Sunday of Lent. The controversy was by some who wanted to remove icons which include Christ, the Virgin  Mary, saints and religious events, Orthodox Christians believe icons have a sacramental character making present  to the believer the person or event depicted in them. The interior of the Orthodox church includes icons on an icon screen called the iconostasis, separating the sanctuary from the nave.
No Orthodox home is without an icon corner where the family can pray daily. The icons are venerated by burning lamps in front of them and by the use of incense.

Host family opportunity for Japanese Youth

Mahoning, Columbiana, and Trumbull County families will have the opportunity to welcome a young person from Japan into their home for one month this year, as part of an international exchange program being offered by the County OSU Extension, 4-H. Host families are needed for 80 Japanese youngsters (aged 12-18) and their adult chaperones, who will visit Ohio from July 24 through August 19. Host families provide the exchangees with room and board and a chance to experience daily life in America. Families are urged not to alter their daily routines or lifestyles during their visitor's stay.
Exchangees provide their own spending money, and the sponsoring organization furnishes comprehensive medical insurance. The young Japanese visitors belong to the Labo Foundation, an organization which promotes the study of English culture and language in Japan. The other youth belong to organizations similar to 4-H in their country. Ohio 4-H has been conducting international exchange programs with these groups since 1949. "Do you know what I learned from this child?" asked one host father. "That you can live together and not understand one word the other is saying, and yet still communicate and learn to love each other." Comments like this from a local family sum up the joy which can result from participating in the Ohio 4-H International Exchange Program. All types of families are welcome to apply to become hosts, including urban, rural, single-parent, childless, and non-4-H families. The only requirement is that for the Japanese month-long exchange, hosts must have a family member of the same gender and approximate age of the exchange. Those interested should contact Laura DePizzo (Trumbull Co.) at 330-637-7384 or Gary Reel 330-533-7712  for an application form and more information about this and other 4-H international exchange programs.
