Nominations for 2nd annual Safety Leadership Award
The Regional Chamber's Mahoning Valley Safety Council (MVSC), in conjunction with sponsor City Machine Technologies, Inc. in Youngstown, is now accepting nominations for the 2nd annual Joan Kovach Safety Leadership Award, recognizing a company that has shown itself to be a leader in safety training, operations, funding and communications. This Safety Leadership Award is named in honor of Joan Kovach, who together with her husband, Michael J. Kovach, Jr., started, owned and operated City Machine Technologies, Inc. since 1985, but who died suddenly in a hiking accident on July 16, 2006. Nominees may be from private, non-profit or public sectors; must be a MVSC member in good standing and a company in good standing with the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation; nominations must be for operations in Columbiana, Mahoning or Trumbull counties. Previous Safety Leadership Award nominees are eligible for re-nomination; previous Safety Leadership Award recipients are not eligible for nomination. The following qualifying factors will be used to judge all nominees: Visible, active senior management leadership, employee involvement and recognition, medical treatment and return-to-work practices, communication, timely notification of accidents/claims, safety and health process coordination, written orientation and training, written and communicated safe work practices, written safety and health policy, record keeping and data analysis and length of membership in the Mahoning Valley Safety Council and similar safety organizations. The nomination form may be found on the MVSC web page on the Regional Chamber's website at www.regionalchamber.com/safetycouncil.html. The MVSC Executive Committee, comprising safety professionals from 10 private companies and two Bureau of Workers' Compensation representatives, will review nominations, which will be accepted from March 1 to March 31, 2008. The Safety Leadership Award will be presented at the May 7, 2008, MVSC Safety Awards Luncheon. For additional information about the MVSC and this award, please contact Dorothy Boggio, executive director of the Mahoning Valley Safety Council, at 330-744-2131, ext. 25, or at Dorothy@regionalchamber.com.

Free Adoption Expo
The Rural Targeted Marketing Outreach project, RTCO, a focused effort of Northeast Ohio Adoption Services, (NOAS) invites area singles or couples considering adoption to a free Adoption Expo in Rootstown. The informal but informative adults-only event is set for Saturday, March 29 from 11:30 until 4:30 at NEOUCOM Conference Center, 4920 State Route 44, in Rootstown, Ohio near Ravenna. The event will offer adoption information for Ohio school aged kids, not international children or babies, in a way that is easy to understand, interesting, and straight-to-the point. Over 6,000 Ohio children, many "tweens" and teens legally free for adoption, are still waiting in the child welfare system for adoption. The hostess for Adoption Expo day will be Sarah Eisler, former morning anchor of WKBN TV News, Channel 27 in the Mahoning Valley. Since January 2007 Sarah has had the opportunity to meet, film, and feature fourteen Ohio children, available for adoption through NOAS. Her stories offer heartfelt glimpses into the unique character of each child to help locate the right adoptive family--who may make all the difference. The featured speaker for Adoption Expo will be Dr. Ray Guarendi, father of ten and a clinical psychologist, author, speaker, and radio host. He will lead a session on traits that will be helpful for adoptive families to have. There will also be a parent panel, and breakout sessions on foster care adoption, information on funding options and no-fee adoptions, the steps to adoption and a tips session on surviving the wait. Guarendi has been a regular guest on national radio and TV on Oprah, Joan Rivers, Scott Ross Prime Time, 700 Club, Gordon Elliot, and CBS This Morning. He has written several books including Good Discipline, Great Teens, a free gift to each pre-registered family if they sign up by March 21. His lectures combine learning with laughter--informative fun. Call Melissa Tharpe at 1-800-686-6627, ext. 126 for details. Adults over the age of 21 are welcome to attend, and NOAS does not have an upper age limit for adoptive parents. NOAS serves children and families from offices in Warren, Garfield Heights, and Heath. Since it was founded in 1978, NOAS has found loving families for over 1,100 children. NOAS does not charge fees to families for adoption. Visit NOAS online at www.noas.com This family recruitment effort is sponsored by NOAS and funded by a five-year grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Cortland Community Band Notes By Janice Powell Hill
With all the February snow we missed a couple practices, but now we're back into the swing of things and working on songs for our summer concerts. Just thinking about summer makes me smile. The older I get the less I like the snow, and this winter has been a real bugger. Oh well, back to music. We've got lots of good music, thanks to our librarian Garey Watson, who puts a great deal of effort into securing new songs and switching our folders from winter to summer. We really appreciate all you do for us, including all the great notes that come out of your trumpet! Love to hear those solos. We're kicking off our summer concert season on Friday, June 6th at the Cortland Relay for Life. Also we will be playing at the Cortland Street Fair this year and we're really excited to once again be part of this fun event. July 2nd will find us at Howland Scope and on July 16th we'll be at the Viets Strawberry Festival. Please check our website for more info on upcoming concerts. We'll also be selling Scrappers tickets again this year, so if you go to the games, please contact a Cortland Band member and we'll get you tickets which can be used for any of the games. The Cortland Band is really blessed with some outstanding musicians. We have several retired music teachers and current music teachers that are a great asset to our band. Also musicians from all walks of life that come together to make beautiful music and enjoy each other's company. So if you think you might like to come visit, please do. There's no tryouts. All you need is a band instrument, the love of music, and be available on Wednesday nights from 7 to 9 pm. We meet during the school year at the Cortland Middle School on Wakefield Dr. Just park in the back and come on in. When you're near us you'll hear us. For more info please call 330-652-2424 or 330-395-1656. You can also visit our website at www.cortlandcommunityband.org.
