Boardman Orchestras
Continue Long Tradition

The Boardman High School Chamber, Classical and Symphony Orchestras continued the long tradition of excellence at the Ohio Music Education Association State Orchestra Adjudicated Event held at Granville High School in Columbus this past weekend.
The 136-member Boardman Symphony Orchestra continued the longest string of unbroken Superior ratings in the state of Ohio with another Superior (I) Rating.   All adjudicators rated the orchestra "Superior".   The Symphony Orchestra has received Superior Ratings consecutively since 1973.  Comments from the judges included: "Bravo!  You did a wonderful job with these three very difficult pieces.  I enjoyed your thorough preparation and attention to detail!", "Wonderful performance!  Every piece was great.  Congratulations on all of the hard work!",  and "Outstand and Impressive!  Very musical playing of a demanding program.  You should all be proud of the accomplishments you have made to be able to perform the type of literature that you did today.  Your performance was musical as well as technically and rhythmically proficient.  Congratulations!!".  The orchestra performed "Carmen Suite" by Bizet, "Unfinished Symphony" by Shubert, and "Colas Bruegnon Overture" by Kabalevsky..
The 84-member Boardman Classical Orchestra received an Excellent (II) rating at State Contests as well.  This group performed "Water Music Suite" by Handel, "Slava" by Rimsky-Korsakov, and "He Shall Purify" from "The Messiah".   Comments from judges about Classical Orchestra included: "Congratulations on a good performance today!  You did many things well - I especially enjoyed the "Slava!", and  "Sound as an ensemble is very strong.  Nice to see so many people using vibrato!".  The resultant combined rating included a Superior (I) rating in sight reading.
The 34-member Boardman Chamber Orchestra once again received a Superior (I) rating, a rating they have been awarded every time they have performed at State Contests.  The Chamber Orchestra performed "Idyll" by Janacek, "Fiesta Jubiloso" by Compello, and "Christmas Concerto" by Corelli.  Comments about the Chamber Orchestra included: "This is a very mature ensemble.  You follow your director well and it is obvious your rehearsals are very productive...it was a great pleasure for me to hear this outstanding string orchestra.  Thank you!", and "Bravo!  Your group played these three difficult selections very well today!  I enjoyed your musical phrasing and thorough preparation.  It was a pleasure to hear you - keep up the fine work!"
These events are provided for students thanks mostly to the efforts of the Boardman Band & Orchestra Parents Association who help support the band and orchestra departments at Boardman through fund raisers, chaperones, etc.  The Orchestra program at Boardman is directed by Frank Dispenza, Michele Prokop and Bill Amendol.
The Boardman Orchestras will be competing in the Heritage Invitational National Music Competition in Virginia Beach in April.  The next regular concert of the Boardman High School Orchestras will be on Wednesday, March 19 at 7 p.m. in the Boardman Performing Arts Center as Boardman Orchestras present their newest rock-orchestra ensemble "Project Mayhem" .   The Symphony, Chamber and Classical Orchestras next perform on May 21 at 7 p.m. in the BPAC.  Highlights from the State and National Orchestra Contest performances will be played in addition to senior soloists Anne Smrek and Randi Yazvac.
