Boardman Bands Score High Marks at Competition
Two of Boardman High Schools four concert bands participated in the Ohio Music Education Association District 5 Large Group Adjudicated Event at Howland High School Saturday, March 15. This event, also called "District Band Contest," has local high school bands performing prepared selections for three judges who give tape recorded and written comments, then assign scores from I to V with I being the best. Following a band's performance on the "floor," they then proceed to a different room where they sight-read a piece no one has seen before. A fourth judge assigns a rating for this performance. The four judges' scores are averaged for an overall rating. The Wind Ensemble earned Superior (I) ratings from all four judges. The group's select pieces were "Hands Across The Sea," "Variations on a Korean Folk Song," and "Covenant (Fanfare and Celebration)." The Wind Ensemble is directed by Thomas M. Ruggieri and Steven Chambers. Performing "Washington Post March," "Salvation is Created," and "…Not Afraid to Dream;" the Symphonic Band earned an overall Excellent (II) rating with a Superior (I) rating in sight-reading. The Symphonic Band was led by Timothy Tuite and Michael Shevock. By earning an overall Superior rating, the Wind Ensemble is now eligible to participate in the State-level contest. Director of Bands Thomas Ruggieri says, "We haven't been able to participate in State Band Contest for many years now because of conflicts with other school events." State contest is always held the last weekend of April and the first weekend of May. "Our orchestra always takes its trip at the end of April and their wind and percussion section is mostly students in Wind Ensemble. Prom at BHS is always the first weekend of May," Ruggieri adds. Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band will be joined by Concert Band and Freshman Band in the Annual Spring Concert of the Boardman Bands Thursday, May 1 at 7 p.m. in the Boardman Performing Arts Center.
