AHEPA condemns
defiling of Greek flag
By Mike Varveris

The 1.4 million members of the American Hellenic Educational Association (AHEPA), a leading Greek-American service group, has strongly condemned the desecration of the Greek flag on a billboards erected in Skopje, capital of the Republic  of Macedonia which shows the Cross on the flag being replaced by a Nazi swastika.
Ike Gulas, supreme president of AHEPA, says the group supports Greece's decision to veto the Republic of Macedonia bid to join NATO. Two AHEPA local chapters are located in Youngstown and Warren,
"We support Greece's decision to stand firm in its veto power," Gulas said. "Simply, the government of Skopje has not demonstrated good neighborly relations by turning a blind eye to the dissemination of hate propaganda toward Greece
"This despicable display of the swastika on the Greek flag is the most blatant display of such propaganda," he added. "Then Greeks battled Nazism during World War  11 stalling Hitler's advance into the Soviet Union."
Macedonia, located north by present Greece, was part of Greece at one time. In  the 3rd century BC, the famous Greek warrior, Alexander the Great was born in Macedon.
Skopje and the Greek government in Athens have engaged in a long dispute on their name "Macedonia." Athens objects to Skopje's use of its constitutional name "Republic of Macedonia" arguing it could lead Skopje to make territorial claims over its own province called Macedonia which has been part of Greece long before Skopje's Republic of Macedonia was founded,
"The bastardization of the flag of the Hellenic Republic (Greece) is an affont of our Hellenic heritage and should not be taken lightly,"  Gulas said. "This is not a type of behavior that should be rewarded with membership to NATO."
