Over 125 Boardman High students, Brownie troops, Boy Scouts, township officials and many other volunteers took part in Boardman's Community Litter Clean-Up Day on April 19 which was prior to the national observance of Earth Day on April 22. Organizing and directing the effort was Township Administrator Jason Loree.
All were given gloves, vests, trash bags and T-shirts, and they collected bags full of trash and litter on Southern Blvd and Mathews Rd along the railroad tracks between South Ave and Sheridan Rd.
Clean-Up volunteers showed up at 9 a.m. in the parking lot behind the Lariccia Bocce Pavilion where they were assigned areas that needed attention and received their gear. Each volunteer picked up at least two pounds of trash and litter, according to Robyn Gallitto, trustee chairlady. The trash was disposed with the help of  the township road department. All items that could be recycled were given to the Green Team.
"We were looking forward to picking up the debris

left over during the winter months,"  Atty. Gallitto said. "Just like home, our township needed a spring cleaning. It was a great opportunity for community service by our resident volunteers, and they did a wonderful job."
She noted that litter has seven key sources: pedestrians, motorists, uncovered loads, dumpsters, scattering household trash from cans with no lids, loading dock areas and construction sites. Boardman has a $215 fine for anyone caught littering.
The Litter Clean-Up Day is part of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources' April campaign to Keep Ohio Beautiful and announced grants of nearly $116,000 given to local towns, cities and organizations to participate in this program by designating one day for Community Litter Pick-Up. Boardman Township received a $2,242 grant for its participation.
The cost of the Litter Day effort was actually $6,336, said Gallitto including equipment and wages for township employees and community volunteers.
