Enrollment for cancer prevention study May 16
Each year the American Cancer Society invests millions of dollars into cancer research. Since 1913, the Society has granted over $3 billion in funding to scientists for hundreds of different research projects that have led to numerous breakthroughs and treatments. Today, the Society has embarked on a nationwide study known as the Cancer Prevention Study-3. The goal behind this study is to discover how to further prevent and reduce cancer incidence. CPS-3 is a research program that seeks people from all walks of life. The goal is to enroll 500,000 people from the United States. The purpose is to determine if genetic, environment and lifestyle factors are linked to cancer. Data collected will be compiled and reviewed to find causes of cancer and ways to prevent this disease. "While progress in the war on cancer has been made, we believe further research will lead to new discoveries on how to prevent or detect cancer," said Annette Camacci, the local volunteer chair of CPS-3. "That's why it's important to have people from all backgrounds involved in this study." In 2008 there will be only three Relays in Ohio that will enroll participants. The American Cancer Society's Boardman Relay For Life at Boardman Center Middle School, 7410 Market Street, is the only area Relay accepting enrollment. The specific day and time to enroll to become a study participant is Friday, May 16, between 7-11 p.m. No other nearby Relays or sites will conduct enrollment this year. "Each year a select number of Relays across the country enroll participants. Since this is a nationwide study, only certain Relays, such as the Boardman Relay, are chosen for enrollment. Those who would like to participate must visit the Boardman Relay site on May 16, between 7-11 p.m. There will be no other local enrollment opportunities available this year," Camacci added. Those interested in participating must be between the ages of 30 and 65 and never been diagnosed with cancer, unless it was basal or squamous cell skin cancer. Participants will complete a brief written survey, provide a waist measurement and give a small blood sample drawn by a trained, certified phlebotomist. "The initial enrollment will take between 20 and 30 minutes. After that, people must be willing to make a long-term commitment to the study, which will involve completing periodic follow-up surveys at home," Camacci added. Since the 1950's the American Cancer Society has conducted other cancer prevention studies. Some of the key findings from pervious studies include: the first to show the link between cigarette smoking and lung cancer; the first to show the significant impact of obesity on risk of dying from cancer; and the first to show the link between aspirin use and lower risk of colon cancer.
