The Jackson-Milton High School Band, conducted by Derrick Kittle, earned a "Superior" rating in the Ohio Music Education Association District V Contest held at Lakeview High School in Cortland, Ohio on Friday, March 14th.  The rating is the highest presented in the event.
"This group of kids plays very musically and they're extremely hard-working," according to Kittle. "Our students have put in extra practice time outside of school hours as a result of missing nearly a week of practice due to severe weather. They deserve this honor."
The OMEA contest requires a band to play three prepared musical selections, one of which is chosen from a list of required music. For their selections, the band played "America Exultant" by Fillmore, "Heatherwood Portrait" by Barnes, and "Prairie Dances" by Holsinger.

The J-M Band was entered in Class C based on the number of pupils enrolled in the high school.
After playing the prepared selections for a panel of three judges, the event then calls for the band to "sight read" and play a piece of music without prior preparation. The director is given several minutes to review the score and talk the band through the music, then the band must play the piece.
The superior rating at the district contest has earned the band a spot in the state OMEA competition to be held April 25th and 26th. The J-M High School Band boasts 53 students from 8th through 12th grades and has a continuing reputation for musical excellence. The band has been awarded the highest rating of "Superior " at OMEA State band contest for twelve of the past thirteen years.

Members of North Jackson's First Federated Church hoped to make some "fast" money and get healthier at the same time. The church ran a non-conventional fundraiser during Lent. It involved congregational weight loss and a church mission trip this summer. Pledges were made by anonymous donors totaling $7 per pound for any congregation member who lost weight during the Lenten season, a traditional season for Christian fasting.
Confidential weigh-ins took place at the church prior to Ash Wednesday with local physician, Dr. Jay Osborne. On Palm Sunday, March 16th, a second weigh-in event took place to determine the total amount of weight loss for the congregation.
"We lost a total of about 200 pounds as a congregation and raised approximately $1,400 for our mission trip," says church's pastor, Brad Jagger. The minister explained that donations from the fundraiser will go to support a church mission trip to work in disadvantaged areas of Georgia this summer.
First Federated Church is an interdenominational church located in North Jackson next to Jackson-Milton high school.  Donations to the mission trip weight loss fundraiser, can be made at
