Sounds of Square County chorus will be having guest nights on April 30th and May 7th. We invite women of all ages--over the age of 11-to join us. The chorus is an affiliate chapter of Harmony, Inc. which is an international organization of women who love to sing barbershop harmony. The chorus offers its services for many groups and organizations. A minimal fee is charged for the performances allowing us to help provide support to two local charitable organizations. We got our name from the fact that Trumbull County is the only square county in Ohio, but we have members from Mahoning County and western PA as well. The common denominator is a love of music and singing. The director is Bob Grischow, who has directed both male and female groups. Meredith Elliot, the assistant director, directs two church choirs in the area. The group meets at 7 p.m. on Wednesday night at Trinity Lutheran Church in Niles. The church is located at 56 N. Chestnut St. The motto of Harmony, Inc. Is " A Blend With Friendship" Come and find fun and friendship with us as we sing in four part harmony. Call Doris at 330-544-2252 or Terry at 330-544-0242 for more information or to book the chorus for your upcoming function.

"Good morning Private" is how 120 Ohio Army National Guard pre-basic training soldiers are greeted on Saturday morning in Newton Falls. They are greeted by recruiters that are also their trainers for the entire weekend. The Ohio Army National Guard recruiters wear many hats and one of them is "trainer". One weekend a month Ohio Army National Guard recruits are required to train in an RSP (Recruit Sustainment Program) unit until they ship to BCT (Basic Combat Training). The Newton Falls training site is part of the Ravenna Arsenal and encompasses Portage and Trumbull counties. The recruits live and travel from Trumbull, Mahoning, Columbiana, Portage, Ashtabula, Geauga, and Lake Counties. National Guard units are required to train on many tasks to support local, state, and federal agencies. After their initial training Guard members are required to go through a 16 hour certification in Civil Disturbance training. Every year after, they are required to conduct mandatory refresher courses. Emergency response, search and rescue, medical evacuations, counter-drug interdiction, natural disaster relief, and civil disturbances are just some of the missions of the National Guard. The war on terrorism has modernized the National Guard to adapt to new missions. 55 Weapons of Mass Destruction Civil Support Teams were created to rapidly deploy at a moments notice. Millions of dollars in modern or upgraded equipment has been issued to units. "When my unit was deployed to Iraq, we had the most advanced equipment that the active duty units didn't even have" said SGT Caleb Clark who deployed in 2003-2005. The Ohio Army National Guard has been in the "Top 5" in readiness compared to all the other states and territories. Ohio's RSP program is second to none in the country and Newton Falls has the best RSP program in the state. There are several enlistment programs to pick from, the newest of which is the Active First Option. For the first time in history, the National Guard can recruit people to serve on active duty first, and then complete their commitment in the National Guard. This program helps the army, which has had difficulty filling its ranks in the past few years. Soldiers can serve 30-48 months and receive up to $60,000 in bonuses. This program will help the National Guard long term and it helps the recruits because they must attend RSP. If you are interested in talking to a National Guard recruiter or unit members please call 1-800-Go Guard or log onto www.1800goguard.com and set up an appointment. SFC Mark Hutton

The Cleveland Cavaliers won their first game of the NBA playoffs defeating the NBA playoffs defeating the Washington Wizards 93 to 86 in Cleveland. LeBron James scored 32 points, six in the final 97 seconds. If you haven't had an opportunity to se the Cavs and LeBron play at the Quicken Loans Arena, try to get to the next playoff game at home. Then plan on treating yourself to a great show by LeBron. James does it all and made several spectacular shots that would not have hit the backboard if attempted by anyone else. Even with a bad back and tired legs, James was outstanding. Everyone in attendance received a yellow tee shirt upon entering the gate and many of the spectators at the full house put on the shirt, at each seat there was a white towel to wave, both had "Rise Up" on them. And indeed there were many times when no one was seated. Just a great game
