"If a person weighs 100 pounds, how much are they lifting when they do a push-up?" Many on the staff of the Newton Falls Public Library try to practice healthy life styles, but had never considered that doing a push-up is not just an exercise, but is also a form of weight lifting. In researching this question, the staff was amazed at how many different types of push-ups there are for people to do. The list, in "Prevention's Firm Up in 3 Weeks" by Michele Stanten, includes the bent-knee, kneeling triceps, one-knee, one leg, and triceps ones. "The Men's Health Home Workout Bible" by Lou Schuler and Michael Mejia actually lists 23 variations of the push-up. Still seeking the answer to this question, we looked in "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Working Out at Home" by Jourdan Zayles. It gives us some interesting information, for example, the male and female norms for the number of push-ups completed according to age. The average woman, 50 - 59 years of age, should be able to do 7 - 10 push-ups, the average man 10 - 12 [p. 27]. However, while good to know, this was not what we needed. Not seeming to locate our answer in one of the books, it was time to search online. According to leehayward.com/pushup.htm, "When you do a push up you lift approximately 60 percent of your bodyweight," meaning a 100 pound person would be lifting about 60 pounds. This is the information we passed on to our patron. Following more extensive research, including the discovery of an actual Physics of Push-ups Forum [lofi.forum.physorg.com/Physics-of-Push-ups_13567.html], there seems to be variations in that figure depending on the type of push up being done. One of their contributors stated, "When performing a full push-up [i.e. bearing your weight on your hands and toes] you are essentially benching (lifting) 75 percent of your body weight. At the knees this is reduced to 60 percent." Physicsforums.com also has some interesting information about the science of push-ups in relation to men, women, and body mass versus strength. To learn more about push-ups or other physics and fitness information, visit the Newton Falls Public Library, 204 S. Canal St., Newton Falls, phone 330-872-1282, or Ask A Librarian online at www.newtonfalls.org.
