Windham Village Park Beautification Day
Submitted by Angie McManus

The Windham Village Park and Recreation Committee is sponsoring a park beautification day on Saturday, May 3, 2008 at 10:00 a.m.   The park is currently being used for baseball games and basketball tournaments but Parks and Recreation Committee Chairman Matt McManus would like to see the other areas of the park, such as the playground and picnic areas, being used as well.  In order for this to happen some improvements need to be made.
The Beautification Day will consist of a general park clean up, planting flowers and applying mulch.  There will be 2 guest speakers:  Wendelin Taylor from the Portage County Solid Waste Conservation District will discuss the importance of recycling, and Katie Dean, a naturalist from Lake Milton State Park will discuss the effects of littering on wildlife and its habitat.  There will be fun, educational activities for kids, such as building bat houses.  McManus hopes to attract brown bats to the park because they each eat an average of 3,000 mosquitoes per night.  There will also be a hot dog lunch provided for all participants.
In 2008 the Park and Recreation Committee plans to make several improvements to the park.  They are currently building new picnic tables and repairing a few old ones as well as adding new park style charcoal grills so that when families go to the park they have a place to relax and cookout.   Horseshoe pits are being installed and McManus is interested in holding a horseshoe tournament at a later date as a way to raise funds to go back into park maintenance.  The Parks and Recreation Committee is also working on a grant to repair the existing restrooms and concession stand and to build another pavilion.
McManus is hoping that the village residents who regularly use the park, as well as those that would like to, will all come out to help and enjoy the activities. For more information on this event please contact Matt McManus at 330-326-2095 or 330-235-4565.

SCORE-Counselors to America's small business

National Volunteer Week is being celebrated this week by the local SCORE office (Counselors to America's Small business) as they continue their over 43 years of free business counseling for area people when they start their own businesses.
The office is located on the campus of Youngstown State University and was started one year after the U.S. Small Business Administration opened its first office. Today the national organization has 370 offices with over 10,000 counselors.
Locally there are 35 men and women counselors with Dr. Terry Deiderick being the only remaining Charter Member. Dr. Deiderick is retired from YSU as a professor and Marketing Dept. Chair in the Williamson School of Business at YSU.
The members have a wide variety of business skills and positions including educators, bank officers, sales reps, research librarians, engineers, CPA accountants, human resource managers, corporate attorneys and business owners in various retail, wholesale and services industries.
The business counseling is done by a team of four or five volunteer retired business executives with not just 45 years of experiences (one counselor), but perhaps 225 years of business expertise and wisdom. The information is free, professional and confidential and usually concerns starting a new business, solving problems of a business in trouble or it could be a business growing too fast and they do not know how to grow effectively and safely.
The topics discussed can include new technologies, advertising, publicity, financing, management techniques, research, marketing, human resources, developing persuasive business plans or other business related topics.
Youngstown SCORE services are available to residents of Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana and Ashtabula counties in Ohio, plus residents of Mercer and Lawrence counties in Pennsylvania. To make an appointment or for more information call 330-746-2687. Additional information may be found at

Alliance Community Hospital to Host "Careers in Healthcare"

Alliance Community Hospital is announcing a community benefit program to offer important information to would-be healthcare workers throughout the area.
During the 2008 observation of National Hospital Week from May 11 through May 17, the ACH Educational Services will offer a slate of instructional and informative presentations that will highlight the vital importance of healthcare jobs in the region and the state.
The signature event of the week's activities will be the "Careers in Healthcare"  seminar, to be held on May 13th between 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. in Conference Room 1-A of the hospital.
Several ACH professionals are pleased to have the opportunity to host mini-forums on healthcare jobs from both clinical and non-clinical areas such as nursing, imaging, engineering, pharmacy, and Information Technology, to name just a few.
ACH staff members will answer questions, distribute educational brochures and hand out other informative materials to those seeking higher education and, ultimately, careers in healthcare whether locally, regionally or within the state of Ohio.  In addition, information from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services will also be available for take away.
"Careers in Healthcare" is free and open to the public.
"This is just one more way Alliance Community Hospital aims to give back to the communities we are so proud and honored to serve," said Stan Jonas, FACHE & CEO of ACH.
