THIS WEEK'S HEADLINES IN THE REVIEW NEWSPAPER'S Local Red Cross welcomes home returning troops
Volunteers from the Mahoning Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross were on hand to welcome home returning troops at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station on Jan. 17, 2012. Red Cross volunteers provided refreshments and support to approximately 200 service members and their families, which were also greeted by the Mahoning Valley Chapter K-9 Action Team.
As families waited for their loved ones to disembark, they spent time with Gus and his handler, Kathy Miller. Proud members of the K-9 Action Team, Gus and Kathy provided entertainment to excited children and emotional comfort to anxious family members. With smiling and tail-wagging, Gus cheerfully spread enthusiasm throughout the waiting crowd.
As the first troops emerged from the plane, the cloudy afternoon skies brightened with sunlight and spontaneous cheers rose from the gathering. Families greeted service members with patriotic posters and balloons, and children waved American flags proudly as they ran to returning parents. Gus and Kathy were present as troops embraced their loved ones, many thanking the Red Cross for participating in their special day of reunion.
The K-9 Action Team is a volunteer team credentialed by the American Red Cross to provide emotional support in emergency situations. In preparation for their annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life, students at St. Patrick School in Hubbard are holding a loose change contest to help raise additional fund for this cause which is important to the school. The class that brings in the most money will receive a pizza/ice cream party. The school does this every year as one of their activities to raise money for the Cancer Society.
Community Service at St. Vincent DePaul Society
Sat., Jan. 21st ten scouts and two adult leaders traveled to the St. Vincent DePaul Society to perform a service project required towards the earning of their Catholic religious award the Ad Altare Dei and the Pope Pius XII. Under the direction of the Society's kitchen manager, Skip Barone, the project was to completely empty the walk-in freezer of all contents and then restock it with better organization and labeling and to check for outdated supplies. The entire undertaking took about 2 ½ hours to complete but was done with enthusiasm and enjoyment knowing that the results would make for a more efficient and better organized humanitarian effort which the Society unselfishly performs day after day. It was a job that the scouts found very satisfying and fulfilling. The scouts, with their two religious award facilitators, represented five area churches that included St. Paul's, St. Charles, Holy Family, St. Michael's and St. Nicholas.
